The Story of Fishing, Friendship, and Tradition from Inside the Port Albert Fishing Club.

The Port Albert Fishing Club Inc has been a proud part of the local community since 1992.
Established by a group of passionate anglers, the club was formed as a place where people could come together to share their love of fishing, swap stories from the water, and build a strong, community-focused organisation dedicated to promoting the sustainability of recreational fishing.
Located in Port Albert, the club has grown steadily over the years while maintaining the welcoming, grassroots spirit it was founded on.
From Humble Beginnings to a Community Hub
In its early years, the club held its first formal meeting at the Port Albert Hotel and continued to meet at various locations around town while members worked towards a long-term goal, building a home of their own.
Through dedication, fundraising, and strong community support, that vision became a reality in 2007 when the club established its clubhouse on Shire land behind the Port Albert Mechanics Institute Hall on Victoria Street.
Today, the clubhouse stands as the heart of the club, a welcoming venue for meetings, barbecues, family gatherings, and fishing conversations that can go on well into the evening. It’s where members connect, learn from each other, and celebrate the fishing lifestyle that brings the community together.
What the Club Stands For
The Port Albert Fishing Club is committed to more than just fishing. As a registered incorporated organisation with Consumer Affairs Victoria (#A0032361P) and ABN 88 466 463 279, the club focuses on creating opportunities and strengthening the local recreational fishing community.
The club’s aims include:
Providing social and recreational opportunities for anglers and their families in a safe and supportive environment
Encouraging and promoting sustainable recreational fishing practices in line with guidelines from the Victorian Fishing Authority
Representing recreational anglers through engagement with affiliated organisations and government agencies
Supporting and encouraging junior anglers under 16 years of age
Building connections across the broader community.
As membership continues to grow, the club remains welcoming to anglers of all experience levels, from seasoned fishers to those casting their first line.
Club Meetings and Social Gatherings
Regular gatherings are a key part of the club’s culture and provide members with opportunities to stay connected and involved.
Monthly General Meetings: Held every second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the clubrooms, these meetings are open to members and guests. They are a chance to discuss club matters, plan activities, and catch up in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Quarterly Social Supper Meetings: In June, September, December, and March, the club hosts a social supper meeting alongside the monthly meeting. These begin at 6:00 pm and are free to attend, with members encouraged to bring a plate of salads or sweets to share.
Sponsor Supper Meetings: The June and March social suppers are held at the Yarram
Country Club in appreciation of their valued sponsorship of the club. Members and their families are welcome, with meals available on a buy-your-own basis.
Annual General Meeting (AGM): The AGM is typically held on the third Saturday of July at midday in the clubrooms. It includes a free lunch and encourages members to contribute a plate to share while participating in the important business of the club.
Fishing Competitions and Club Activities
Fishing remains at the centre of club life. The Port Albert Fishing Club hosts monthly competitions across Corner Inlet and surf environments, giving members the opportunity to test their skills and share in the excitement of the catch.
These competitions are designed to be inclusive and enjoyable. Some members fish competitively, while others simply enjoy the social aspect of getting out on the water together. Either way, they provide a chance to strengthen friendships and celebrate the local fishing culture.
Beyond competitions, the club also participates in friendly events with other fishing clubs, often scheduled around public holidays. These gatherings are typically social in nature and welcome members and their families to take part.
Supporting the Next Generation of Anglers
Encouraging junior anglers is an important focus for the club. By welcoming young fishers and providing a supportive environment, the club helps pass on skills, knowledge, and respect for the marine environment to the next generation.
Members also contribute to the club’s online community through its Facebook page, where photos, fishing stories, and interesting articles are shared among the membership.
Fundraising and Community Support
As a non-profit organisation, the club relies on memberships, fundraising, and the generous support of sponsors. Their partnership ensures the club can continue providing memorable experiences, events, and opportunities for all members.
One of the club’s key fundraising initiatives is its annual raffle, which helps keep membership fees affordable. The grand raffle is drawn on Christmas Eve, delivering an unexpected festive surprise for three lucky winners. Tickets are available both in person and through the club’s website.
A Club Built on Community
More than three decades after it began, the Port Albert Fishing Club continues to be a place where community, friendship, and a shared passion for fishing come together.
Whether attending a meeting, entering a competition, helping at a fundraising event, or simply enjoying time by the water, members are part of a club that values connection as much as the catch.
For locals and visitors alike, the Port Albert Fishing Club represents the spirit of coastal community life - welcoming, active, and always ready for the next day on the water.
